While we aren't totally bereft of chain restaurants here in the Twin Cities, somehow, ten of the largest chains in the country have sidestepped our fair hamlets. And for some among us, that really chafes.
Zaxby’s, Waffle House, Steak n’ Shake, Carl’s Jr., Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ’n Biscuits, Longhorn Steakhouse, Whataburger, Wawa, Golden Corral, and Jack in the Box are all absent from our dining scene — painfully absent for many of you.
So last week, we asked which one of these ten national restaurant chains you would most like to see in the Twin Cities. You answered with the force of a thousand hangry keyboarders. What's the one chain above all other chains that you'd like to see here?
The Corpus Christi, Texas-based chain finished in first place with 24 percent of the vote.
Popular in the South and Southwest, Whataburger is known for its classic hamburgers and its iconic logo, a majestic "Flying W" if you're a fan, or a series of orange-hued shrugs — ¯_(?)_/¯ — if you're not.
The bad news for fans is, while there are more than 700 Whataburgers across America, none are anywhere near Minnesota. To sink your teeth into one of their finest and mumble the phrase "What a burger!" you'd have to drive to... Oklahoma.
After Whataburger, you're most heavily craving something scattered, smothered, and covered at Waffle House, and a chance to double-fist a burger and a taco at Jack in the Box; those two chains tied for second place at 13 percent.
Coming in fourth, with 11 percent, for the chain restaurant we need added to our local scene? "None."
Never change, Twin Cities.
