Summit Brewing has announced plans for a canning line, starting production next year. While no specific plans are public yet, the brewery expects to can around three of its already established brews sometime in the second quarter of 2014, selling them in a 6-pack of 12-ounce cans. The cans will be produced in a recently acquired property just behind the brewery, previously owned by Twin City Tile & Marble Company.
[jump] "We intend to focus the bulk of our packaging in bottles," says marketing coordinator Carey Matthews. But she says adding a canning line is an important opportunity, and will give Summit access to additional venues such as golf courses, parks, and outdoor events. "Outdoor culture is very important to Minnesota and upper Midwest."
Other Minnesota breweries, such as Lift Bridge and Finnegan's, have recently added cans to their production but have opted to have the beer canned by a third party. Summit will do their canning onsite. "When our neighbors decided to sell their property, this opened up the perfect opportunity," Matthews explains of the decision. Summit had already been considering a canning line and, as a result of the new purchase, "we can have 100 percent control over the process."
Summit recently finished a $7 million expansion and has seen growth near 10 percent in 2013. The new purchase will add another 40,000 square feet to Minnesota's second-largest brewery.
The brewery claimed a silver medal for its True Brit IPA at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver earlier this month.
