The first time I went to Balls, the most memorable performance of about a dozen involved a man shouting atheist poetry from inside a refrigerator box. The second time I went, a musician who was in the midst of a small tour through the Midwest stopped by for a heartbreaking acoustic guitar rendition of the Shirelles classic, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" The third time, some musical-theater majors from the U of M hilariously performed show tunes dressed as pop stars and politicians. So, regardless of when you attend, there will be at least one memorable performance—be it unsettling, touching, or playfully creative, which is saying a lot considering the open performance event has been running for over a decade. Host Leslie Ball manages to create a space that feels supportive, warm, and fun, even sometimes reminiscent of theatrical performances by kids in tree houses, playgrounds, or slumber parties (performances begin at the magical stroke of midnight, after all).
