Senior editor Brad Zellar was researching another story altogether when he literally stumbled upon a remarkable cache of photos--over 20,000 images in all--made by a Honeywell engineer and part-time news stringer named Irwin Norling. Taken mostly around Bloomington in the 1950s and 1960s, the pictures captured not only the transformation of a town into a modern suburb, but a school of newsgathering (scrappy, thorough, and done on a shoestring) that has since vanished. The Norling archive that Zellar discovered is being looked at by museums, galleries, and publishers.
