BEST DINER
The New Uptown Diner
2548 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis
612.874.0481

A good diner should have breakfast all day long, and all night long for that matter because when the party is over and the bars close, god knows you don't want to be scrambling eggs all alone. The Uptown, through all its recent re-locations and despite the dancing Lucy, Snoopy and Linus statues outside the door of the current, spic-and-span venue, is, first and foremost a diner. Its menu covers all manner of breakfast - Tex Mex and Cajun eggs; omelets with fried peppers, onions, cheese; and Eggs Benedict with real hollandaise; fluffy sourdough pancakes (with real maple syrup) and little breakfast sausages; hash browns, of course; hamburger, cheeseburger, tuna melt, fajita, chili, soup, plus, thick soothing shakes and malts. As in any good diner, the plates are big, the portions generous. But it's not just the food you come in here for. Its those plastic pots of coffee and the thick white mugs; the guy sitting on the stool next to you at the counter willing to share the sports pages, the waitress who remembers your name. It's the fact you can hang out here on Saturday night until 3:00 am, and though Mom may have said you'll find nothing good happens after midnight, the Uptown proves otherwise.
