One glance at the Golf Club Hospital tells you they've been plying their noble trade for decades. (Since 1967, in fact.) If the hand-painted window display doesn't tip you off, the wares inside surely will. Hell, even their website has a retro feel. But step inside the tiny storefront to watch the past and the future collide. Stately relics from the 1920s—hickory shafts and all—share the stage with the latest offerings in titanium and composite graphite. Stan Steuter, the chief surgeon, can not only bring Grandpa's persimmon woods back to life (for about $45 apiece), he's equally able to custom-build a brand new set of sticks especially for you. Regardless of your handicap, even routine procedures like re-grips ($5 to $8 per club) and loft adjustment ($4) are performed with meticulous care. Lots of places in town can sell you a set of clubs off the rack, but few can offer this level of expertise and personal service. Steuter sums it up best: "We're craftsmen, not salesmen." On our several visits to the Golf Club Hospital, we have found the staff to be straight shooters, no matter how minor the wound.
