BEST PLACE TO SHOOT POOL

Brunswick's (at Grandma's Saloon)
1810 Washington Avenue South
Minneapolis
612.340.0516
The cheapest way to play pool is also the hardest: Go to a bar, put your quarter down on a busy table, and don't lose for the rest of the night. That's fine for Minnesota Fats, but for the rest of us, hourly table rental is the only way to shoot stick. This hall—located above Grandma's Saloon on the West Bank—charges just $5 per hour yet remains underused, making it one of the cheapest and, ironically, least seedy billiards halls in town. Their cues aren't exactly top-condition, and if you're looking for action, you probably won't find it here, but tables are easy to come by if you show up early enough (the joint opens at 6:00 p.m.) and there's no limit to the number of players allowed at each table. And the pool isn't the only thing that comes cheap at Brunswick's; the upstairs bar slings two-for-ones until 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays are the best time to go; not only are you guaranteed an open table, but all tap beer—or, as we call it, "aimin' juice"—is just $1.50 after 9:00 p.m.
