Do not waste breath or brain cells trying to explain the menu of the Muddy Pig, the popular hangout just over Cathedral Hill from downtown St. Paul. Burritos, pastas, jambalaya, and a “sausage and kraut bake”? It makes no sense on paper, and yet in person, feels inarguable. It’s bar food. And a great, beloved bar is all the Pig aspires to be. Look no further than its continuously updated beer list, a curated selection that makes room for almost every local beer of note, plus a bevy of rare imports for the internationalist in your group. And you will be in a group. Once someone announces a pilgrimage to the Muddy Pig, anyone within earshot will say maybe they, too, ought to get back in among the dark wood and dimmed lighting. Every neighborhood needs such a place. Few are lucky enough to have one.
