Ordinarily, it would be difficult to properly assess such a new coffee shop. But Penny’s, which opened in November 2016, came onto the scene obviously hell-bent on being the star of the show. We’ve heard it said that the best coffee shop is the one closest to home, and while that may be true, the second best is the one with the fresh crepes folded over prosciutto and housemade pesto, with the floor-to-ceiling windows so dramatic the place could double as a bank lobby, with the patio that seems straight out of a Las Vegas poolside lounge, with the baristas in lab coats, with the game-changing sound system, and, oh yeah, with the great coffee, too. Penny’s owners opened the Washington Avenue flagship with every intention of turning it into a national, and possibly even an international, brand. With that in mind every detail had to be perfect, above and beyond, and just so. And it is.
