A proper pub’s a place to tell a story. Here’s a good one: Husband and wife see their south Minneapolis neighborhood is lacking a community gathering spot. So they create one. Fred and Stacy Navarro’s George and the Dragon is about the most family-friendly tavern this side of the pond, down to the books and toys available on a shelf. Happy hour revelers are welcomed, but be warned: By around 6:30 p.m., the restaurant likes to keep tables available for families looking to share a meal. Their fare weds the pub’s English origin with the owners’ own cultural inheritances, which include Filipino, Irish, and French. Bangers & mash shares a menu with the pork-and-rice “Asian Hangover,” and a beef rib toastie is listed just above a banh mi. Heresy, to the proper Englishman? Offer him a hard cider, and tell him the story.
