When a veggie burger is the only suitable option on a menu, that's generally a signal that a restaurant isn't putting much thought into accommodating its non-meat-eating customers. At Modern Times that couldn't be further from the truth. Their house-made Thai tempeh burger takes its inspiration from a flavorful traditional Thai fish cake, packed with aromatics like cilantro and garlic and well-balanced sweet, hot, sour, and spicy components including sliced jalapeños and a good dash of tamari. Then the whole patty is deep fried until golden and placed on a soft potato roll, slathered in basil-flecked veganaise and topped with cucumber, onion, and lettuce. Modern Times seems to understand that just because some people eschew meat doesn't mean they turn up their noses at anything a little greasy or gluttonous.
