Just like our rapidly multiplying local breweries, there's an exciting small-batch ice cream scene in development. But don't write off the old guys. Izzy's has been an ice cream innovator, proudly standing at the crossroads of flavor and technology, since opening its doors 15 years ago. Izzy's hosts an annual People's Flavor Awards, where they develop and serve the wildest flavors their customers can dream up, and then vote on the winner (Midnight Snack, the 2009 champion, is devilishly good: graham cracker ice cream with peanut butter swirls and chocolate chunks). In 2005, they installed rooftop solar panels that produce a third of the St. Paul shop's energy, and in 2010 they launched an RFID-powered label system that scans the freezer case every three minutes, alerting customers via email when their favorites are available. With 150 flavors (and counting) to choose from, we're happy to be kept in the loop.
