Expectations were sky-high going into the 'Mats' first hometown gig in 23 years. Our beloved local bar-band-that-could delivered a set engaging long-time and first-time fans alike at the St. Paul Saints' ballpark. A Replacements performance is never perfect, but the September night was awfully close. Original members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson led the madness in center field during the last major event Midway hosted before it was scheduled for demolition. The hits were all there ("I Will Dare," "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial"), alongside shambolic, curious covers (Jackson 5, Jimmy Reed, Sham 69). It was a night many never thought would happen again here in the Twin Cities, and one we'll be talking about for a long time.
