With a reputation as the favored snack of paunchy police officers everywhere, doughnuts are not exactly thought of as glamorous. Or at least they weren't until Glam Doll Donuts came to town in February. Owners Teresa Fox and Arwyn Birch have created a stylish oasis on Nicollet Avenue, where they welcome hungry patrons and invite them to bask in the retro charm of the spacious, adorable, '50s-reminiscent shop, complete with vintage fashion magazines and photo booth. The store is open long hours (starting at 7 a.m. every day and reaching all the way till 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday), and is wisely focusing all its efforts on the signature product (along with Intelligentsia Coffee). And boy, does that product deliver: These doughnuts come with cutesy names that make them fun to order, but that doesn't detract from the quite serious flavor they pack. There's the Calendar Girl, a raised doughnut with just the right balance of salted caramel and chocolate; the Femme Fatale, a filled number with fresh raspberry curd and vanilla icing; and the Chart Topper, a cake doughnut topped with peanut butter and sriracha, which packs just a bit of a spicy kick. The regular menu also contains the apple-bourbon fritter Pinup Girl (with or without bacon), a couple of crullers, and much more. Plus, the Glam Doll gals sometimes add extra options, such as kebab-style tiny doughnuts on a stick, topped with pineapple icing or chocolate frosting and mini M&Ms. It's all so fun and delicious that Glam Doll is more than a doughnut shop, it's a major mood adjuster.
